Hey, everyone, this is Mike.
We just had a great day in Beijing! This morning, we got up and went and saw all the Olympic stuff (i.e. the Bird's Nest and Water Cube), which just happens to be within walking distance of our friend Stephanie's place (which is where we are living while we are here for a visit).
Our friend Jim got in safely last night from the States and is out cold now sleeping (probably a little jet lagged). Kelley is still awake and going strong, reading a book. Please PR for Amanda; she went to bed early because she wasn't feeling very good (feeling pretty good on Tuesday!). We appreciate you thinking of us.
After the Olympic stuff, we headed down town to a market called the Silk Road where you can't even take one step without someone offering to sell you something or have you look at something. I think it gave us all a headache. I don't think they understand that people would like it better if they could shop without being hounded.
Oh well, we got Kelley a great (fake) North Face down puffy and Amanda some jade earrings.
We then made the mistake of taking a taxi rather than the subway, which is how we got to the market (very clean, fun, new, and exciting way to travel). It took us just over an hour to get back to Stephanie's which isn't even over 5 miles away!! Ahh, and you thought traffic was bad where you are. Welcome to Beijing (one of the biggest cities in the world).
Then, tonight, we played some Settlers of Catan, which I almost won and would have if not for Stephanie and her D cards. Stephanie, our host is very generous with the accommodations and food, so I (Amanda) can't fault her for playing a tough and good game! :)
Now, it is time for some sleep. Tomorrow, we are off for some more fun at the Forbidden City and other cool sights. Sorry, no pictures; We don't have a way to really get them on this computer easily but we will post a bunch later.
Much love from the big city,
M+A (and Kelley and Jim!)
